What shapes your views of people and communities around you? Upon completion of reading and interactive lessons thus far in the class you’re now ready to respond to the following questions. Reflect on and answer each of these in a narrative reflection. This may be in first person and should follow all APA style conventions.
What shapes your views of people and communities around you? How have your experiences created or challenged biases?
How has explicit bias shaped your views of people and groups? Use examples (e.g. you may reflect on media, childhood experiences, etc.).
What have you learned about implicit bias? Did you uncover any implicit biases in your IAT experiences? How will you work to continually uncover and challenge implicit biases as a social work professional?
Name a time when you have been discriminated against because of someone else’s bias. How have you responded to this bias?
Discuss the role of understanding bias as a social work professional. How might you encounter bias in your professional life? What is your plan for understanding and managing bias?
What are three key take aways from the readings in Module 3 – provide a short discussion of each.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
This essay should be no more than four pages in length, excluding the title page and reference page.
Showing connectivity to course readings/materials is required. Meaningfully cite a minimum of two readings/artifacts from the course. Additional outside sources may also be used.
When appropriate, the student may write in the first person. An abstract is not required. An appropriately formatted APA reference page is required.
A note about page length: Do resist the temptation to write more than four pages. Creating a succinct discussion is an important skill for social work practitioners. Sit with the writing prompts and focus on the salient points you want to share. If you go over the page length, your paper will be returned to you for revisions and will be counted as late.
It is important for social workers to be able to engage in self-reflection, an expected component behavior of professional behavior, but in a way that is primarily grounded in academic content and not a means to solely share personal experiences.
