Instructions for paper draft #1
Due March 22, 2021 – Email by class time
The rough draft of the paper should lay down the framework for
your final paper. The final paper page expectation is 10-12 pages
(with references). You certainly can do a longer final paper. So
you should prepare a rough draft of about 6-7 pages for the initial
draft (of course it can be longer). The rough draft should
include:
1. A statement of your thesis/ argument.
2. Development of your argument throughout the paper. This
will be incomplete in the draft but try to explain each section of
your argument as fully as you can. Follow your outline. I realize
that your research is in progress but have some narrative in each
section.
For example, you might have 3-4 major claims in the draft.
Try to include some evidence that will support these claims.
3. A statement of your tentative conclusions.
4. Cite sources. You can either footnote, endnote or include the
citation in the body of the paper. An example of the latter is
(Smith, 1999:23). That means that you obtained your material
from Smith, published in l999 from page 23. The full
reference should be included in a reference page at the end of
the paper. For example Smith, John. 1999. Racial Profiling
in the United States. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, p.
23. Provide full citations. The citation style can be MLA,
Chicago, ASA, etc.
S. Spell check. Make sure you have full sentences and
the reader can follow your argument. Double-space and type.
Use Word and include page numbers.
Late draft papers will not be accepted.
6. This draft will not include a letter grade but the check
system. The next version of your paper will be graded.
Here is a rubric that I will use to help assess your drafts and final
paper
