The first question essay is:
1. In The Methods of Ethics, Henry Sidgwick defines utilitarianism as follows. “By Utilitarianism is here meant the ethical theory, that the conduct which, under any given circumstance, is objectively right, is that which will produce the greatest amount of happiness on the whole.”( this paragraph is taken from the reading I downloaded below”Sidgwick, the meaning of Utilitarianism” Second Paragraph.
Explain in detail what he means by this. What do you think is the most appealing or the most problematic aspect of Sidgwick’s utilitarianism? Explain.
Second essay is:
2-In “Personal Freedom and Others,” the second part of The Ethics of Ambiguity, Simone de Beauvoir presents a number of characters that represent unethical ways of choosing to respond to the ambiguity of the human condition. Among these characters are the sub-man, the serious man, the nihilist, the adventurer, and the passionate man. Choose three of these characters and explain why the way they respond to ambiguity is unethical, in de Beauvoir’s view.
Note to the writer: Please rely only on the reading materials I will upload below. Be simple but efficient in your writing. Imagine you are explaining to someone who does not know the material while writing the short essays.

The reading for first question is downloaded under Article to be used ( “Sigdwick the Meaning of Utilitarianism”) and it is the reading you should rely on to answer the prompt. When you do so please cite ( Sidgwick, The name of the article, paragraph number for example 4:429, and sentence number for example 1-4) It is the reading you must understand to answer the question.
Same for essay2; lecture notes: Chapters–> week 10 and 11 ( only to understand the reading, do not copy from it please, you can paraphrase). “Beauvoir exceprts”is reading and I downloaded the Quizz question and answers because they ma be useful to answer Beauvoir’s essay.
Please make sure to cite the last name of the writer, the paragraph part and the lign number when you explain, for example ( Beauvoir, 4:429 1-3)
