The Stafford Act is a United States federal law designed to bring an orderly and systemic means of federal natural disaster assistance for state and local governments in carrying out their responsibilities to aid citizens.
The Stafford Act authorizes the president to issue major disaster declarations that authorize federal agencies to provide assistance to states overwhelmed by disasters. The Stafford Act is amended by Public Law 106-390, October 30, 2000.
Disasters such as the Katrina hurricane in 2005, the California wildfires in 2007, and the American Samoa tsunami in 2009 have raise several hard criticisms to the effectiveness of the Strafford Act leading critics to advocate for an amend to the law to better serve people in the face of a disaster.
