Step 1 – select a scholarly article from an academic journal

Article should be related to a topic of interest (or random)

This article should (but does not have to) come from a database on the Ivy Tech online library site https://library.ivytech.edu/allstate or https://library.ivytech.edu/fortwayne (FW campus)

Step 2 – read the article; take notes along the way

Focus on the author’s stylistic choice and their overall effectiveness

Step 3 –



Attention-getting first sentence (may not think of a good one until after you’ve written the whole paper)

Provide context of the topic/issue you chose

Thesis: ID the author and title (if you haven’t already) and provide a preview / general statement of your overall evaluation of the article (and its effectiveness)

Sample thesis: Mark Robbins’ article “Save the Homeless” provides several unexpected and eye-opening moments and pushes the reader to be more welcoming to saving or assisting their fellow humans.
