My First Job

Most individuals believe that puberty is
one of the most crucial stages of one’s life. As an adolescent, you experience
numerous exciting activities, such as football games, acquiring a driver’s
license, or graduating from high school. Everyone’s first occupation is unique.
There are several justifications for this, including the fact that the expertise
is imprinted in one’s memory because it provides the necessary preparation for
other roles and teaches you the worth of money. After all, while we are
youthful, we conduct household chores such as washing dishes, cleaning, and
laundry, but working for money gives us a more profound sense. Looking back, I
feel that my first job was the most significant milestone in my childhood.

It was February 18, 2011, a crystal bright
morning with the sun barely soaring the pinnacle of the hillside and the breeze
picking up. I put on my skiing gear, fetched my radio, and jumped on my
skateboard. This was my inaugural day in the workplace as a patrol officer at
my neighbourhood ski slope. I felt goosebumps as I recalled my training and
preparations. I prayed I could recall all I had been taught if things went
wrong.

I felt the morning breeze
whirling snow over my forehead and cheeks as I boarded the skiing lift,
and the tiny particles of ice striking my cheekbones felt like daggers and
stings on my skin. Amidst my worries and the weather, I was eager to go to the
slope. Skiing has been a hobby of mine for as long a period, and I was thrilled
to be pursuing what I like. Several other patrol officers and I searched the
slopes to give the ski-lift operators the go-ahead to open the gateways. While
inspecting the hillside, everything appeared to be in order, and the weather
conditions were ideal, and thus the operators opened the gates.

Snowboarders of all ages and skillsets
flocked the hillside. Everything went swimmingly until shortly before midday
when I overheard somebody shout out for aid during my final lap down the slope
before lunch. I came to a dead standstill and glanced around. I heard another
plea for assistance on my left, so I hurriedly unbuckled my surfboard and
rushed over. I ran up to a man approximately five foot tall and three hundred
pounds sitting under one of the bumps as I climbed the slope above the
skatepark.

When I got near enough, I noticed his leg
was twisted at an odd angle right around the ankle. My pulse started racing as
I fought back the terror that began to set in. I realized I could not help this
person to the skiing station by myself. I sighed deeply and urged myself to
relax as I felt I ought to be relaxed and calm, or I would upset the wounded
person more. I immediately turned on my two-way radio and informed the other
patrol Officers. The other patrol officers arrived shortly after with a
stretcher carriage.

The chief Snowboarding officer then
interviewed the individual and examined him for a possible concussion or other
wounds. We worked as a team to hoist him onto the carriage stretcher once he
completed the concussion protocols. After that, we placed him onto the sledge
and dragged him straight to the ski station. We could tell after we arrived
that his leg had fractured and required splints. I had no experience placing a
splint, so I observed closely while my boss applied one. Since the man was
already exhausted and in excruciating agony, making transferring him much more complex,
we helped carry him to the transport van. I noticed the man was in agony, so I
tried to distract him by talking to him. Luckily, he seemed better when the
splints were applied, although he could not walk independently, which
complicated things since we wanted to get the transport vehicle to transfer him
to the clinic.

 I
learned from this encounter that staying calm and relaxed is crucial when
assisting people in an emergency scenario. Additionally, I learned the
importance of good communication and teamwork in such a scenario. Considering
everything that transpired, it would not have been easy if there were no team
to support me and help in the whole situation.

The fact is the diversity and
complexity of the work was what kept me returning despite the daily challenges.
Each day was distinct, and there were so many obligations that I never reported
to work, anticipating what the day would bring. As I gained more experience, I
could handle blizzard management all day, spend more
time drilling out structure pegs and answer first aid emergencies.
The list of potential chores seemed infinite. The tension linked with the
possible disastrous implications of decisions we made, such as opening terrain,
was perhaps my least preferred aspect of the job. I appreciated the actual
process of making judgments, which included gathering data, minimizing hazards,
and making joint decisions, although it is hard to remove dangers in such an
environment entirely.

In my opinion, this job is a great
profession, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys skiing and enjoys
working as part of a team. Generally, once you have completed all the necessary
training before applying, you will have a greater likelihood of getting the job.
When I first started this job, I assumed it would be something I would do for a
short period until I figured out the profession I wanted to settle in, but then
I discovered it was what I wanted to pursue. If I had discovered this, it would
have given me a head start in the field, and I would have started training
earlier.

Every individual has a starting point in
their career, and we all face various challenges in whatever we decide to
pursue. I did not like my job as a ski patrol officer at first. Regardless, I
could not wait for the next workday as time progressed. Our values, such as
patience and determination, and the challenges we face shape us to be better
people in future. My first job also taught me the importance of teamwork and communication.
