topic: When Maathai began the Green Belt Movement, she had certain specific goals in mind for Kenya. Why did she choose to work through a parallel women’s movement? Do you think this decision helped or hindered her cause? Furthermore, how did the Green Belt Movement achieve broader ramifications beyond her initial, more limited, goals? This is your third essay. The purpose of essay 3 is twofold: to practice the rhetorical modes of “Comparison and Contrast” or “Cause and Effect” and to discuss the impact of Western colonization on Kenya as depicted in Wangari Matthai’s Unbowed. After reading Unbowed, choose one of the topics below. To prepare, explore the topics addressed in each question; then formulate your own thesis (narrow focus and viewpoint) which will allow you to address these issues succinctly. You should rely primarily on Maathai’s book. This is a short essay, so focus your response wisely. The essay (600 word max again) will be evaluated in the following areas: Content: clear focus; effective analysis; appropriate, sufficient, and convincing evidence; evidence of independent and critical thinking Unity and coherence (effective and appropriate organization, transitions, etc) Correct language usage and mechanics; appropriate tone and diction; sufficient revision to add clarity, conciseness and emphasis. MLA format in all aspects of the paper: headings, parenthetical citations, works cited page, etc. UNBOWED BOOK IS THE SOURCE
