The Uncertainty Principle
May 14th, 2022
The uncertainty principle arises from the idea that when you observe something, you affect it somehow. Often, this simply means that you shine a light on the thing you’re looking at. In your initial post to the discussion, address the following:
For macroscopic objects, the momentum from the photons’ impact will have no measurable effect. Discuss why this is different for atomic-sized objects. Why does shining (very short wavelength) photons on electrons not tell you exactly where the electron is?
Discuss how taking some everyday measurements—such as the temperature of a water bath, voltage, current, the pressure in your bicycle tires, and other examples you can think of—somehow changes the original thing you were measuring.
