Phonemic Awareness vs. Phonics
May 14th, 2022
Using the information in this week’s required resources, write a 1- to 3-paragraph research-based statement that could be shared with families that compare and contrasts phonemic awareness and phonics. Include:
At least one quote to let them know how vital phonemic awareness is for emergent readers. (What will be the consequence if a child is not phonemically aware?)
Two examples of activity ideas for home enhancement of phonemic/phonological awareness skills
Include at least one activity from beginning phonological awareness (general sound awareness, word awareness, syllable awareness) and one activity from later phonological awareness (blending, segmenting, manipulation of sounds).
Two examples of activity ideas for home enhancement of phonics skills
Be sure to identify which are phonemic/phonological awareness activities and which are phonic activities. See the Week 2 introduction and chart as well as the required readings for additional information.
