investigating a specific piece of queer arts or culture. Who is the target audience for a piece of queer art or writing? How does that work in question subvert or challenge its audience—does it? Why might the author make specific choices throughout the work? Are those choices effective?
For this essay assignment, you’ll be engaging in any LGBTQ+ reading/book/documentary that grabs your imagination. Drawing on multiple specific examples (with quotes as needed), think about the main idea of the piece of art/writing. What is it trying to say (either consciously or unconsciously)? How does it say that? Who is the work in question written for? What specific moments most related to this central idea—or challenged it?
I want you to research existing media coverage of this artwork, using reception of the work to help determine audience and themes. (Feel free to disagree with the book/artwork or with the audience!) One way to potentially organize this essay would be to introduce the work, to analyze key moments, and then to bring in reception of the work, looking at how that connects to the themes you explore.
