Congresswoman Lauren Underwood is a
nurse legislator who serves Illinois 14th Congressional District.
The congresswoman attended the University of Michigan, where she graduated from
the school of nursing in 2008 (American Organization for Nursing Leadership.
(n.d.). Lauren Underwood has been on the frontline advocating for healthcare
and nursing issues in order to improve health care delivery. As a legislator, the
congresswoman’s role has been to bring pressing healthcare issues into the
limelight, to foster discussions around them to necessitate policy formulation
or change. Legislators have the power to bring about policy changes in various
issues that affect healthcare delivery. Nurse legislators are especially suited
for advocating for healthcare issues because they have experienced the
healthcare system first hand and seen the associated problems. Thus, the significance
of the legislator’s role as an advocate is their ability to influence policy
changes to improve health care delivery.
Congresswoman Underwood has sponsored
several bills that have influenced healthcare. One of these bills is the
“chronic Condition Copay Act” introduced to Congress in September of 2019 (Congress.gov.
(2021). This bill requires health insurance companies to cover the extra costs
incurred by chronically ill patients as they seek preventative care without
asking them to cost-share the charges for the care provided. The second bill is
the “Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2020.” This bill instructs the
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to deal with the issue of
maternal health outcomes among minority groups (Black Maternal Health Caucus. (2021). Both these bills
have a major influence on healthcare. The first bill will make it easy for
patients with chronic conditions to receive additional preventative care, while
the second bill will ensure that all maternal health issues of minority groups
are adequately addressed.
